November 6

Hi,
Life, as we know it here, has settled into somewhat of a routine. That is because Denny continues to be an incredibly good patient, the hospice nurses are so incredibly helpful, and the kids and friends have been so incredibly available.
Denny is probably sleeping nearly 75% of the time, but when he is awake he enjoys visiting and watching television. His visitors have included classmates from his days in the seminary, colleagues (past and present) from Xavier, friends, and family. The four grandkids continue to light him up when they arrive with their artwork and/or crawl up onto his bed. We are surely trying to create happy memories for all of us.
The hospice nurses don't visit on weekends, but Dave is coming home to help me and I'm sure we'll handle things okay. He and Chip are going to find a way to build up Den's king-sized Lazy-Boy recliner so it sits higher off the floor. That will be a major help for me when I'm here alone and need to transfer him back to bed or to the
commode.
We are delighted to see that the XHS volleyball team is in the State finals tomorrow. GO Hawks!! We'll be with you in spirit when you beat Memorial!!!! We were sorry to see that the football team was defeated tonight, but we know that those boys put 110% in to their season. Congratulations guys and coaches.
Enjoy what is predicted to be a beautiful weekend. Our love and appreciation to everyone reading this entry. It's comforting to know that so many are hanging in there with us!

Love,
Carla

Good Morning

We are just leaving for LaCrosse this am for the last priest ordination of the year in our Diocese. Robert went to same seminary as both boys now go. He has been to our house a lot. We are sure Denny has the same satisfaction with former students as you have seen them progress. Have a great weekend. Our thoughts are with you both.

cousins Gary and Amy O from Stevens Point.

Good to hear that you have been able to establish a comfortable routine... Cathie and I will be at the VB tourney today, and will think only positive thoughts about Xavier- of course, they probably won't need any extra help from us :-)!

We continue to pray for you and your family, and feel blessed to be able to follow your progress on the blog... Thanks so much for doing this.

I would really like to come and reminisce with Denny about the years at SHS and at St. Norbert... also, it would be fun to talk about those few years playing on Dennis Long's BCI basketball team in Appleton. Such a treat to play on the same team with Oudy! A gentle giant in many ways more important than his exploits on the hardwood.

Be well,

Lee

Hi Mr. O and Carla,

I just caught wind of the blog recently and have followed the last few weeks. I can't believe it's been a year since we talked at Joey and Sarah's wedding. A lot has gone on for your family. We'll continue to pray for you all. Say "hi" to Chip for me, I can't believe we are coming up on our 20 years reunion!

Our thoughts and prayers are with you!

Carla,
We are doing that. Hanging in there with you and Denny. Love Tom and Sandy
P.S. I know the Hawks are his teams, as they should be. But the Griz are now 9-0 and should be in the national playoffs

Dear Carla and Dennis,

Please know that you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.
Thank You Mr. O for all that you taught both of my children. Both Laura and Karl have learned far more from you than class material. You are a special person.
Thinking of you,
Chris Betchner

Hey Mr. O and Carla,

I've been following your blog on and off for some time now. I wanted to say my thoughts and prayers are with you guys.
Mr. O, even though I was a bit of a slacker in your class, it's the one class I still talk about how much I learned. I recently had my 10 year reunion, and in the process of digging through scrapbook stuff, found the journals you had us keep. That was pretty cool to look back on.
Thank you for being a great teacher, and keep fighting!

Hi Mr. O and Carla:

I have been meaning to send a note for quite some time now. I had Mr. O for English of course and as a track athlete, remember him as the boys' track coach back in the day when they won state 2 years in a row. For the past 10 years I have been staying at home with my boys ages 8, 10, and 13, still run, and coach grade school track (grades 5-8 coed) for St. Thomas School (where my kids attend) here in Grand Rapids, Mi. Now that my kids are in school all day, I am rather struggling with what God is calling me to do - more volunteering? a part-time job? I look at Mr. O and know that he truly lived his calling. To be a role model and mentor for high school kids and a husband and father is an incredible testimony to Christ's mission. Thank-you! P.S. Freshman year at UWEC I was able to "rewrite" all my English papers I turned in to you senior year (1986) in high school and earned an "A" in Freshman 5 credit English. That's when I realized what a great teacher you were.

My thoughts and prayers are with you-
Amy (Lee) Drees
