November 22

Hi,

There really isn't much to report since my last entry. We've had some very long nights--that seems to be the time Denny is most restless. He will calm down for a few minutes if he hears my voice (or Shannon's on the nights she has stayed here with us.) But the calm doesn't last very long. Last night we left the lights and television on, thinking he would sense some activity and possibly feel more secure. It did seem to work for a few hours, so tonight I will try that again. I rearranged his bedroom today so the recliner is next to his good side because it also helps just to hold his hand. I think it helps me as much as him.

I still read to him and every so often he will make one of his deadpan remarks that have always made me laugh. I appreciate all of the e-mails, blog posts, and cards--
it's that special time of the day when he can hear, again, what a great role model he has been to so many students and athletes. When his time does come, he will certainly leave this life knowing he made a difference in this world.

Until next time,
Love,
Carla

Carla and Mr. O...
I haven't commented at all yet, but have been following your blog for quite awhile. Thank you for keeping so many of us updated.

I sure miss seeing the both of you at church and because of Mr. O and his encouragement, I think I will forever be a lector at St. Marys! :)

You all continue to be in my prayers.

Take care...

Hi, Dennis and Carla,

I always thought that you had the patience of a saint; now I know that both of you do.

When Joseph was a tot and had trouble going and staying asleep, we used to leave music on all night that was soothing. Their is medical evidence that music can change brainwaves and induce soothing effects. We used some "New Age"; Andreas Voldheimer's Down to the Moon; harp music, and Our Daily Bread's instrumental Hymns, are all very soothing. There is also music for sleep that is specifically written to induce Delta sleep waves and lead to relaxing sleep.
This idea may help both of you get a restful sleep and feel better the next day.

Hey, Dennis, remember the forms for doing the Reading Committee surveys? Apparently there are also other forms for other applications by the same professor, so we are using them while working on school improvement in areas other than reading. I thought of you and me working on the Reading Improvement Committee when I was working on them. I miss working with you at Xavier.

I hope that the music idea helps both of you get much needed rest.

Fondly,
Cindy Winkelman

Hi Mr. and Mrs. O.,
I just wanted to stop by to say I hope you have a great Thanksgiving. This year, I will stop and think hard about all that I am thankful for and that includes having had Mr. O as a teacher. He taught more than just English. So thank you, and enjoy your holiday!

Mr. & Mrs. O,

You are in my thoughts and prayers. Your courage is inspiring much like Mr. O's presence in the classroom, on the field and off.

Please know that you are surrounded by love.

Thinking of you and your family,

Julie Wenning

I like your idea about the lesson plan. I'm sure it would have been a good one..along the lines of The Last Lecture.

God bless!

Mrs. and Mr. O,
You are in my thoughts and prayers as you approach this holiday weekend! I often tell my husband the many stories I have from English class. As a teacher, I hope to touch as many lives as you have, Mr. O!
