October 31

Happy Halloween!

Today was a good day. Denny slept peacefully through the night until lunchtime. He ate well, went back to sleep, and then was up from about 5:00 until nearly 9:00.
He watched football with Dave and Chip, played with Connor and Grant, and then we watched the end of "Footloose." I read him your cards, e-mails, and blog responses
which still seem to take him by surprise when so many credit their successes to lessons learned from him, either as a teacher, coach, or the outstanding role model he has been throughout his life. He always smiles and shakes his head and sometimes says, "I was just doing my job."

Our day began with Xavier's very own Merry Maids (that would be Kathy Bates, Sarah Simon, and Beth Rippl) showing up to clean our house! Of course, Sarah brought enough food for our family for the weekend, so that was a wonderful surprise. (There is one lucky guy out there who just hasn't met her yet! She is something else!!) Other neighbors and friends stopped in, too, so the day went by quickly. Now it's time for some sleep.

I hope you are all enjoying the weekend. Hug someone you love extra tight!!

Love,
Carla

Hi Oudenhovens,
Well, I just was updated by Shannon of your new bedroom and was directed to your very nicely updated blog spot. I just wanted to let you know that my family is praying for yours. We know how awesome God can be with everyhting that we have gone through. It has been so nice getting together with Shannon. You guys have raised such a wonderful women/friend. (not too mention some adoralbe Grandkids!!!). Bryce and Ryan seemed to click instantly and it will be interesting to see the girls play as they are starting to get older.
Other than that, I would like to tell you how easy my english classes were at Marquette due to my wonderful preparation!! I had such a great teacher! Thanks for always making classe interesting and fun!
I will continue to keep you in my prayers. Anne (Hietpas) and Dan Hafner

Hi Dennis and Carla,

I should be grading lab books but I wanted to first write a short note to you both...the grading is a daunting task, as a you know, but it can wait!

Your blog updates these past two days have been so helpful and I feel privileged to be part of the community that cares so much for both of you. I am beginning to understand where you are at and I admire your courage tremendously. I'll admit I was frustrated with the news of your situation last week. In fact, I found myself feeling very angry at times about what you have had to go through! You seem at peace however, and that is an incredible comfort for all concerned. It is also nice to hear about the good care you are getting at home and how trustworthy your physicians are.

We visited Rachel in Chicago this weekend and she sends her very best to you both. She is anxious to get home and see the musical in two weeks and we are anxious to have her home as well. I will come and visit this week and prepare a meal for you - I'll call in the next day or two to see what is a good time to come by - until then, take care and may God's goodness and comfort surround you.

Stephanie
